Monopoli
Monopoli is a picturesque town with around 50,000 inhabitants, surrounded by the Adriatic Sea in sunny Puglia. The nearest airports are located in Bari and Brindisi, with Monopoli lying midway. It is about 50 km to the two cities.
Bathing in Monopoli
The apartment lies just a minute’s walk from the sea, where you can enjoy the local cliffs and beaches. Alternatively you can take a 5 min walk to Porta Vecchia beach in the city’s old town, or continue 10 minutes to the south where you will find several other small, sandy beaches.
More Sun and Bathing
In addition to the many fine beaches nearby, there are also bathing spots by the cliffs of Monopoli as well as its nearest neighbour Polignano a Mare, located 8 km to the north.
To enjoy sunbathing and swimming on classic long beaches head to Capitolo (6km to the south by car or local bus), where you will find a selection of beach clubs with deck chairs and parasols to rent, as well as various bars and restaurants.
Food and Wine
In town, fruits and vegetables are commonly bought directly from farmers themselves and can easily be found around town. The same goes for cheese and olive oil, with a variety of different types of mozzarella and other cheeses available for purchase from small producer-owned shops. In Monopoli the fishermen work year-round, which makes the supply of fresh seafood in local shops and restaurants unbeatable. You can also enjoy Puglia’s renowned wines, amongst them the famous Primitivo di Manduria which has its home here.
Restaurants
There are countless restaurants in Monopoli’s old town, with price levels being relatively low. While most restaurants serve seafood you can also find pizzerias as well as amazing steakhouses where customers can choose exactly which piece of meat they want grilled.
Day Trips
Within an hour’s drive you can enjoy excursions such as visiting the unique caves in Castellana, exploring Ostuni with its beautiful, white, baroque buildings, Alberobello with its traditional trulli houses, or the city of Matera which has been named the 2019 European Capital of Culture.
Golf
The San Domenica Golf Course has an 18-hole course, while the Coccaro Golf Club has a 9-hole course – both are located 14km from Monopoli.
Good to know
Flights: It is about 50km to the nearest airport in Bari, and a little further to Brindisi. There are more departures from Bari airport, especially during the winter months.
Train: There are good train connections between both Bari and Brindisi to Monopoli. Shuttle buses are available from the airport to the train station.
Car Rental: Both airports have many options for car rentals, including well-known companies such as Avis and Hertz as well as other domestic and European options. A good tip is to use Autoeurope or Rentalcars to compare deals and rates.
Parking: There are plenty of parking spaces in Monopoli outside of the old city walls – here you will find both free parking as well as paid parking marked in blue. Residence permits are required for parking within the city walls.
